I just started getting into the band Trapt... They have this unique, kind of rock and its not hardcore... you'll find slight traces of hiphop kind of blend in their music. Its awesome. And then try Meg & Dia, its rock but definately not hardcore, Three Days Grace has melodious rock songs like "never too late" and "pain"... Just give it a shot... And if you are sick of hardcore just go mainstream pop rock for a while then... like Good Charlotte, Daughtry, Simple Plan, Yellowcard, and the list goes on... just try them... I dont think u'll regret it.

Free your mind ... and the rest will follow.

DISCLAIMER: my suggestions will not be songs covered on American Idol :)

For a "Safe" answer - stick to stuff like the Polyphonic Spree, the new Sparks record (for young lovers), Broken Social Scene, or some Flaming Lips. I think you'll be more pleased than you were with Delores' first record (Cranberries).

On a Rock-side - the Kaiser Chiefs, the 1st Kasabian record, and one can't go wrong with Franz Ferdinand or Jet.

Now ....
If you're feeling a bit "adventerous" - may I suggest something a little more "tasty" (with fava beans and Chianti) ?
Corn Moe is hilarious, Trachenberg family Slideshow is entertaining, and that Tacks, the boy disaster record is a pleasant surprise.

Check out Meg & Dia! What I love about this band is that most of their songs are based off of books. For example, "Monster" was inspired by the book East Of Eden by John Steinbeck, and "Tell Mary" was inspired by the book Mary by Vladimir Nabokov. I don't know if you like to read, but they've introduced me to lots of great literature, so that's another bonus. Listen to their songs "Courage, Robert" and "Tell Mary."

The Like is good too. I saw them open for Muse a while ago, and they were fantastic live, so if you ever get the chance to see them, do it. They've released a few EPs plus one album. My favorite songs are "June Gloom" and "Mrs. Actually," but the whole album is pretty solid.

Daphne Loves Derby is pretty good too. They just released a new album earlier this year, called Good Night Witness Light, which I think is definitely their best so far. Check out "Cue The Sun," "Stranger You And I," "A Year On An Airplane," and "Hopeless Love."

Also check out Minus The Bear. They also just put out a new record, about 3 months ago, and it's called Planets Of Ice. They're sorta known for having really weird song titles, especially on their first few albums, like "Lemurs Man Lemurs," and "I'm Totally Not Down With Rob's Alien." Listen to their songs "Knights" and "Drilling."

Also check out...
Copeland, Wolf Parade, Dear And The Headlights, The Matches, The Spill Canvas, Limbeck, Interpol, Straylight Run, Mae, Hidden In Plain View, Earlimart, Anberlin, Halifax, and Blonde Redhead.

just refresh your player with "new" music that you have on your hard drive or disc collection, listen to the radio, browse the record stores and internet and you might catch something else different that suites you.

Me myself, I tend to go back and forth with my tastes but i get lazy (or tired from work) to change the music on my player (I have recorded some songs on my player that I have to update, sorry off topic).

UPDATE: not sure who is giving everyone thumbs down, but if it's the asker then I'd have to ask why ask then? I know I had a good suggestion and that I think you're lazy if you can't actually confer with people and consider some of the answers her (or from other not online). Again turn on a radio - away from Top 40 or internet radio for new music. Lazy lazy lazy.

for a completely different genre and experience try listening to some Ska.
think:
punk + hardcore + horns, trombones, etc. + reggae = Ska
some good bands are:
Operation Ivy, Reel Big Fish, Streetlight Manifesto, Voodoo Glow Skulls, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Goldfinger have a few ska songs

there is a website called isohunt.com i believe where you can download playlist im not sure if it is just for indie rock but try typing in a genre and then playlist and see if anything comes up; you have to download a program called azerus first though im pretty sure there is a link to it on their(isohunt's) website. its pretty cool, there is like a new playlist every month (for the indie/rock playlist anyways)

Good Luck!

alternatively you can start listening to AFI, Tears For Fears, anti-flag, david bowie, the cure, boys night out, the bravery, death from above 1979
just to name a few

oh i forgot MCR lol just kidding i dont even listen to them
