Hey all,

I have a 60GB hard drive and a 200GB hard drive in my desktop computer and my 60GB is full so I bought a 250GB hard drive to replace it. When I install the 250GB hard drive, the computer won't start up but if I put the 60GB hard drive back in than it will start.

I thought the way around this was with an external hard drive case so I bought that and installed my hard drive but now the power won't start. I have narrowed it down to a power problem because when I unplug the power to the hard drive, the external case lights up but as soon as I plug the power into the hard drive, it automatically shuts down like it's short circuited.

Is this a faulty hard drive or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance. Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion of power but it wouldn't explain why the external hard drive case will short circuit because it's doesn't run on a power supply. It runs straight from the transformer.

try to change your power supply. if that does not work, your motherboard might not recognize the drive right.

Sounds like you need to replace your PSU (power supply unit) with something with a higher output wattage....look inside your computer and check to see what your PSU's rated output is...if its less than 250w that is your problem.

I would say, buy a 500W powersupply. It'll help you also later on when you start to connect some USB devices that also draw power from your CPU.
