Hi ITSJUSTME,

Sorry that you got laid off.

My real estate office just anounced Tuesday morning, that they are closing as of Dec 14. and most of the administration and receptionists are being laid off this Friday.

One of them already has a new job at another real estate company!

I would recomend:
Stay positive, ask for a letter of recomendation.

Be nice, and don't burn your bridges

Let the agents in your office know that you would appreciate their help if they know of any opennings at other offices. Or any other kind of business if you really need to keep working.

Keep in touch with the real estate agents in your office and other companies that you may have met during your time there, also loan reps, title reps, escrow people, and inspection companies, contractors, pest control companies, lawyers, insurance agents, and anyone else who you met during your three years there.

And there are lots of agents who would pay for an assistant who has a background knowledge in real estate like you do.

I know of one former administrator who was let go two years ago from our office, (she got into an argument with the owner, whoops!) and now she hires herself out to several different top-producer real estate agents handling their files, managing their listing and marketing materials, checking their listings and being their "girl friday" and she's making as much as she did before and working mostly from her home.

Okay, that's all for my advice.
Good luck & hope it all works out for you.
I'll pray for you too.

please pick mine for best answer,

The same thing pretty much just happened to me! Then I got two other job offers within 3 weeks. So I wrote a little survival guide on what worked really well for me. Hope it helps you land on your feet as soon as possible.

There is no law that an employer pay you for anything more than the hours you have worked. Anything they give you over and above that is a gesture of goodwill.

Not the law, it's just a courtousy gesture when companies do that. You are entitled to claim unemployment insurance though. The process/program differs depending on your state though.

Probably cause you spent too much time on answers.
But seriously, no they don't have to pay you for time you haven't worked.

There is no such law. They have to pay time worked and any vacation time (not sick time) due to you.
