Well, this all assumes that a) it wouldn't leave me disfigured, and b) that the living remainder of my body could be adapted so it wouldn't be harmed by the bionics going outside human limits.... ^_^
First choice: One or both of my arms. I'd prefer both. For starters, it would simply be more comfortable to have my shoulders and carpal tunnels *fixed and working right*, once and for all. And for enders....I'd be set for life. ^_^ To elaborate:
--with bionic hands I could be the fastest touch typist ever and definitely be more employable, and...
--with bionic arms, upper body strength would mainly be a non-issue. Which means self-defense would be a non-issue too. ^_^ I'll take the Boxing and Aikido programs, thank you...
Second choice: One or both of my eyes. I'd prefer simple augmentation to total replacement though, since I like my two-toned eye color. Not to mention my peripheral vision is already pretty kick butt.
But yeah, it would be cool to have my retinas and lenses chipped so that I could have night vision...or switch to major binocular mode....or just have my eyes become a 24/7 high end cell-phone camera so I can upload everything I see to the internet, no hassles required. And yes, GPS-enabled locator vision would be neat too. ^_^
Can it be done in my lifetime? I dunno, I'm already 40 and not in the best of shape for this....
But the technology is being seriously and actively prototyped. It's been in the news recently that one team of researchers is trying to train a monkey to control a robotic arm with his thoughts as if it were his own limb....
And you can search the site below for the phrases "retinal chips" and "artificial vision":
http://www.popsci.com/
It's a smart search, it takes its time, but it will come up with *relevant results* and little to no spam. Got to like that! ^_^
But yeah, barring any disasters of a man-made, political sort, I could see this stuff becoming common enough to be *affordable* and ordinary in the next 20 years or so.
The main catch will be coming up with the nanotech and surgical reinforcements so that the remainder of the living body isn't damaged or disfigured by the cybernetics.
^_^ Thanks for your time!
