Each 'pick' is an independent event. The probability of picking a brown sock is 6:9, then the probability of picking a black sock would be 3:8, the probablity of it happening in that order would be 18:72 or 1:4

Chances of getting a brown sock on the first try are 6 out of 9, or 2/3. Then there are 8 socks left, and 3 are black, so chances on the second pull of getting a black sock are 3/8. So chances of this sequence, brown then black, are 2/3 * 3/8, or 1/4.

1:4

If a blind man was trying to get dressed and choosing the socks, he would only have to pick 3 to have a pair.
