okay, so my character is in a scene with his mother. He is about 25 and he is starting his very own burger place. His mother is his first employee. He is very mean and agressive. My director wants me to be act mean to my mother in the play, can people give me some tips on how say my lines?

I agree with Theatre Doc. Without reading the script it's hard for us to help you and no one here wants to coach you that much especially for free! That's your director's job.

There's so much more to this story, like the background story between he and his mother. Questions to ask yourself are what's their relationship like? Do you know (or can you make up) what it was like for your character growing up with her? Why is he angry? Does he blame her for his father leaving (or however his father acts...)

You say mean, I say frustrated. Why have his mom work there? Maybe that was his only choice and that's frustrating. You can do this. Read your script. Read it a few times. Break it down and ask yourself questions and if it can't be answered with the contents of the script, make it up yourself using clues you find in the script.

Do this then ask your director to help you further.

Listen to what is being said to you and what you are saying to the other character.

Ask yourself some questions:

Why is he mean to his mother?
Did something happen in his childhood that made him hate her?
What is the back story or subtext of your character?

Go through your script and outline what the other characters say about your character. You have to figure out what motivates him to act the way he does. If you can do this then the line delivery should come out on its own through your character.

OK Your first problem is you are trying to act. That's all wrong......when you want people to believe you and i mean really believe that anger is what you are feeling, you must be angry. How do you feel when something makes you mad? Take those things that you do, then apply them to the "scene."
once you have reached your emotional commitment, your lines will naturally come out the way they should.

Be aggressive and shout. push her around. basically treat her how you would treat an enemy.
