It was mainly economic with some power ego trips involved.
Foreign lands would have unknown riches - Incan gold, Fountain of Youth, spices, and new food sources. They were a good place to dump your criminals and debtors. Most of the explorers simply ran into America while trying to get to the other side of the world.
