Her son sleeps with the light on? That isn't a flash from the phone, the angle of the lighting makes it look like it is coming from "the right and above" of the picture, probably the ceiling light or a lamp. Given that, the lighting doesn't match up, implying either two light sources or that one was added after the fact. Unfortunately, given how pixelated the picture is one can't say for sure that it has been photoshopped (the simplest way would have been to take two real pictures, splice one into the other, then lower the resolution enough to resemble a cell-phone picture).
And whatever that is in the photo, it isn't standing. It is at least at a 45 degree angle to the rest of the room (looks more like it might be laying down and propped up on something).
Furthermore, I tested that with my own phone. If the thing was taking its own picture, it was holding the phone about four inches to the right of its face (slightly more or less depending on its actual size), about a foot away from itself, and it would have had to have been looking at the ceiling. In other words, it couldn't have been playing with the phone and taken the picture accidentally and it couldn't have been trying to take its picture because that would also mean it was just stupid. Amazingly stupid. In other words, if that is a face and not just a pile of junk, it was stagged.

Umm... well if everything you're saying is true, that is a definitely very creepy.
It looks like it could be just a weird looking person or child. Or some sort of doll or something, but... It's strange.

It does look very strange... a doll or an alien? My daughter at two and a half years was drawing a smiley face with three eyes in a row and then when I commented on it she just smiled sweetly and drew two antennas! Wonder who was visiting her.

Obviously it was searching for something or it wouldn'be messy...hopefully it got what it want...or it may come back..doesn't seem to wan to hurt the boy but it would be best to have the boy sleep by the parents.
