how do all the seperate elements of the film relate to and contribute to the theme, central purpose, ot total effect?
can someone please help me with this question

I think it has something to do with a free rug and catching fish with a hail mary. But I'm not sure.
Seriously. If you are taking a class on film and you need to ask this question about one of the greatest movies ever made, you are probably in the wrong class. I mean. Did you even WATCH the movie?

all the sepreate elements of the film i.e. seperate story lines , seperate eras, seperate characters all come together to show us How and why the Corleone family came to be
It tells us why all the central characters are the way they are
Micheal going from war hero to powerful mafia Don
How you Vito Corleone worked his way up as honest family man to one of the most powerful men in NYC
The theme is as always in these movies is that although these men may gain power in money it is not without sacrifice
for instance don Vito Corleone loses his firt born son , sonny Corleone to a bloody ambush
michael ends up losing his wife and his brother Fredo
It is the most perfect saga ever put on film that portrays the mafia at it's most realistic, not just the Power and Money but the human losses suffered as a result of such a lifestyle

Godfather part II has a lot of flashback to the first movie. It sets up the revenge for the expulsion from sicily and the murder of the main character's family. Godfather Part 1 is one of the finer motion pictures of our time.
