All previous answers are WRONG! SOS is a very convenient message to send by telegraph, as S is three dots and O is three dashes. It is unmistakable and easy to remember.
It is only after this was adopted internationally, replacing the previous QRRR signal for help, that "Save our Ship" was wrongly suggested as the origin.

SOS was a call for sailors when a ship was going down.

And the more modern version is Some One Special
