Costs; 1) you may cause temporary psychological distress in the subject, (hopefully only temporary) 2) you may create mistrust in the individual towards you or the field of psychology. Benefits; 1) Your finding may eventually lead to a good done to individual's or society in the future. 2) you can add to the field of knowledge in whatever particular subfield of psych. you are studying.

The rewards must outweigh the costs done to society or the individual in the long run, and you should respect the privacy, integrity and humanity of the individual. (of course, that's where the debate begins: "where are the lines drawn?", I suggest going to a psychological ethics board and asking them) if so, then I think it's okay for there to be some deception.

People don't like being lied to, and will eventually figure out they are being lied to, when this happens they throw the entire concept of psychology out the window! There are no benefits, I'm waiting for the rest of the world to catch up to this reality. Psychology is a form of control through manipulation of power and the mind by people who are greedy, power hungry and corrupt. It was created for this reason, and continues to remain here for this reason. Psychology is a science based upon hypothesis. Chemical imbalances have never been proven, they are based upon theory, and most psychological drugs have long term effects on individuals, yet rarely cure anyone, but have a reverse affect. That is why they put warning labels on drugs, claiming they can cause suicidal thoughts in depressed people! How does a drug that cures depression, cause suicidal thoughts?! ;-(

I think deception applies to dermatology, but those who work in the medical profession can interlink psychology with skin care, or if cosmeticians are using it
as a business strategy.
But they should not as a research.
once it has happened, and resulted in genocide not to far in past history.
