The Haunting (original)
The Uninvited~with Ray Milland
The Innocents
The Changeling
House on Haunted Hill (original)
I Walked With a Zombie
The Seventh Victim
Isle of the Dead
The Body Snatcher (with Boris Karloff)
Cat People (original)~much better than the title suggests
Curse of the Cat People~more of a fantasy film
Bedlam
The Leopard Man
Carnival of Souls (original)
Curse of the Demon aka Night of the Demon~The creature isn't that frightening, especially compared to today's creations.
The Ring 1 & 2
The Grudge 1 & 2
The Invisible Man~Claude Rains
Frankenstein~Boris Karloff
The Bride of Frankenstein
The Ghost of Frankenstein
The Mummy~Boris Karloff
The Wolf Man~Lon Chaney, Jr.
The Werewolf~Steven Ritchie
Mad Love~Peter Lorre
13 Ghosts (original)
House of Usher~Vincent Price
The Pit & the Pendulum~Vincent Price
The Tomb of Ligeia~Vincent Price
The Raven~comedic horror with Price, Lorre and Karloff, plus a young Jack Nicholson!
Village of the Damned (original)~actually SF but has the eerie atmosphere of a horror film
Chamber of Horrors~Cesare Danova and Patrick O'Neal
Eye of the Devil~Deborah Kerr and David Niven
The Devil Rides Out~A huge phantom spider is the only creature, as far as I recall.
House of Wax~Vincent Price
Dead of Night (1945)
Race with the Devil
Burnt Offerings
Island of Lost Souls~Charles Laughton as Dr. Moreau//This is based on H.G. Well's "The Island of Dr. Moreau".
Skeleton Key~Kate Hudson and Gena Rowlands

I think I managed to avoid any that are gruesome; and only a couple have creatures, but they aren't all that scary. I would have added "The Tingler", an older film with Vincent Price, but it has a centipede-like creature and a scene that is a bit grisly.

I'd have to agree with Mothman Prophecies. They don't show the monster/creature in the movie and it's still very creepy.

I'm a scary movie wimp, but my friends are all fans of Hitchcock movies. They're creepy and mysterious without being disgusting.
