Do you mean a Brake job? If so i'd get several estimates. No need to replace rotors unless you've run the brakes down to metal on metal and driven them that way awhile. I did my daughter's Volvo and pads were around $30 at O'Reillys auto parts. The rotors had good runout so a little sandpaper to knock the glaze off was all that was needed. $500 for a brake job is a bit much.

Depends on the condition of your rotors if they need replaced or not. If you are capable of removing your own tire, do so. Make sure you block the vehicle's rear wheel and set your parking brake before jacking it up. Once raised, block the frame of the car and lower your jack just till the car rests lightly on the block. Normal disc brake rotors will be smooth with no signs of metal upon metal contact, i.e. grooves worn into the rotor from pads wearing off and rubbing the backing into the rotor. You can't see the inside as well, but can feel with your fingers. Overheated rotors will have a blueish haze to them. This can cause uneven braking and a "lob" in your pedal as you brake. Most rotors can be "turned" to give them a new finish instead of replacing. Ask your mechanic about this. You can always go to a reputable shop such as Meinike or any national chain. Always ask your mechanic to show you your old parts and explain why they were replaced. This will help you understand where your hard earned money went. Overall this does not sound toooo expensive considering it is around a two-three hour job and the quality of parts your car takes. You can always call a parts store and purchase your own parts to be installed but this bothers most mechanic shops because they make more by purchasing and marking up such items. It never hurts to shop around unless this is your main mechanic. A good shop will make you feel comfortable and when you find it you will know. Good luck!
