During the Clinton administration, the Republican party sought to generate political advantage by making much of a real-estate development deal that Bill and especially Hillary Clinton had invested in. Hillary was a part of the Rose law firm, which may have been involved in this as well. The development's name was to have been "Whitewater." The Clintons had lost money on the deal, so there could be little basis to the charge that they'd enriched themselves through some nefarious dealings with Whitewater, but the Republicans flogged the issue as much as they could, until some other issue came along.
