In general, home heating oil and diesel are similar. The difference is dependent on a few things - to include where you are located (there are geographic differences in the US).
Those differences mainly pertain to the amount of sulfur permitted into different grade of no. 2 fuels, and of course the added tax placed on diesel that is not placed on fuel oil.

As others have said, you should be safe. If you have any concerns, call another oil company and see what they have to say or if they can make a delivery to you. The inconvenience of trying to shuttle many gallons of diesel to your storage tank would be enough motivation to find an alternate supplier.

If I were in your shoes and faced with a choice of spending a night or two in a hotel, freezing or using diesel, I'd use diesel.

Call the guy's boss.

He'll be able to tell you if it is safe, and deal with the driver if it is not.

(I'm neither a chemist nor a heating oil guy, but I wouldn't mix them without an independent source telling me it was safe. That sort of thing is usually pretty well regulated because of the chemicals involved.)

Edit - since you said this guy IS the boss, I'd give my business to someone else. If you wish to read up, try http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles/warner43.html

As some of the other posters have said, the paragraph on diesel explains that they are the same thing. For more links, Google home "heating oil" diesel.

It is safe diesel is a version of the same as heating oil.K 1 Kero is more refined and will not gel.So if you have an outside tank use K1 if it is underground or in your home you can use diesel fuel.I have done this and diesel is not explosive! But I would call another oil company if you can't depend on him what good is he take your money somewhere they give you service.

it is exactly the same thing, the only difference is that red dye is added to heating oil. This is try to prevent heating oil sales for use in diesel auto's as heating oil is generally much cheaper than diesel fuel.

Use kerosene. You will be fine then, but yes diesel fuel will work the same. Call another oil guy if that would make you feel safer.

i do no longer see how anybody can think of that the actual soreness is shared the two between adult ladies and men - its obtrusive females bypass via a lot extra. although i could say the emotional soreness of becoming up is fantastically equivalent (and likely, emotional soreness contains issues like weight-reduction plan, no longer setting up in, understanding, shaving to look extra desirable etc).
