I've been messing with computers for 25 years and never had a problem with frying motherboards. Once you pull the power cord out, the computer only has any stand-by power for a few seconds. However, inside the power supply, there may be high voltages stored in capacitors. That's why power supplies have their own little case inside the computer's case. So long as you're not opening the power supply itself, you'll be fine.

I always try to lean my bare arm on the case when I'm working on it so I discharge any static at that point rather than through my shiny new expensive parts. Most likely, this is how your friend fried his motherboard.

I've been working on computers since 1971. Once you unplug the computer, be sure to unplug all the peripherals also. The monitor and the printer and the scanner and the Ethernet cable can send small voltages back into the computer. Also go to your local electronic parts store and get an anti-static wrist strap, AND USE IT! The computer should be on an antistatic mat which conducts static charges away from the computer. After you unplug the computer, press the on button. that should discharge all the residual charges in the power supply. It wouldn't hurt to wait a minute or two also until you touch anything inside the case (with your wrist strap on). Everything should be straightforward after this. Good Luck and have a happy learning experience.

There may be some residual power but not enough to fry your mother board.just unplug everything from the power source and let it sit for a couple minutes. It wouldn't hurt to disconnect all components "optional".
install new components ,connect all peripheral devices and plug back in.

yes the computer still has electricity running through it. Just be sure that you're not working on a cement floor. place your CPU on top of a cloth or something that doesn't conduct electricity
