The original name was Armistice Day. Armistice Day is the anniversary of the official end of World War I, November 11, 1918. It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." While this official date to mark the end of the war reflects the ceasefire on the Western Front, hostilities continued in other regions, especially across the former Russian Empire and in parts of the old Ottoman Empire.
After World War II, it was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and to Remembrance Day in the British Commonwealth of Nations.
It is one of the few holidays in the US that has not been changed to a Monday,

Armistice Day.
Now, it honors the soldiers who have served in all of our wars. It was originally designated to honor the US soldiers killed in World War I.
The date signifies the 11th day of the 11th Month, when at the 11th hour (11 AM) the Germans signed the armistice, in a railway carriage at Compiegne France, that ended the fighting in World War I . 11:00 O'clock AM November 11, 1918.
Twenty two years later, Adolf Hitler had the French sign the surrender documents in the same railway carriage in 1940.

I believe it was originally called Armistice Day, and celebrated the end of World War I (the Great War, the War to End All Wars, etc). Since it obviously failed to "end all wars" eventually it was felt that the day should honor all veterans. Hence the name change.

It was observed on May 30 until 1971, when most states changed to a newly established federal schedule of holiday observance.
