Hawaii is an island state and is about 142 islands in a long chain. Only the six eastern-most islands are large enough for tourists to visit. The rest of the islands are older and have been eroded down over millions of years. The newest current island is the one on the east end, which is the Big Island of Hawaii, and it is still growning as lava pours out of its active volcano and adds more land. A newer one east of the Big Island is forming under the ocean, and is called Loihi.

An island is completely surrounded by water. A peninsula is connected to a larger piece of land.
So Hawaii is an island state.

Hawaii is an island (the largest one) in a chain of islands known as the hawaiian islands, formerly the sandwich islands. The group of islands, also collectively joined the united states back in 1959. hawaii is not a peninsula at all, but part of the islands do contain them. That is an three-sided part of the land like florida or cape cod that have water on the three sides.

Everyone else is wrong. It is neither an island or a state. It is a peninsula jutting out from the upper left side of pangea's bottom right coast.

It's a group of islands, each surrounded 100% by water (an 'archipelago'). It is also a state.
