11 dimensional string theory, (and 26 dimensional M theory), has not produced anything.
It is possible that the extra 7 dimensions of space in string theory, (that are not perceived), are mathematical deception that first appeared with 5 dimensional Kaluza-Klein Theory.
String theory is possibly deception involving adding dimensions of space to the already existing 3 dimensions of space one dimension at a time at 90 degree angles to the previous dimension.
That string theory is possibly invalid is stated at the end of the wikipedia article on string theory.

I don't know enough about the mathematics behind string theory or its opposition for my opinion to be worth a damn. But from what I can tell, the complaint is that it hasn't made predictions about the world that can be experimentally verified (yet...). That's a complaint that can't be ignored, as it means string theory is not scientific (pre-scientific?). On the other hand, if it truly does not conflict with the paradigms of quantum mehanics and relativity, and even smooths over their collisions, as string theorists claim, then it's worth keeping an eye on, at least. Whether or not it's worth devoting one's professional life to is another matter.

I believe string theory could be one explanation but, it is far from a unified theory. Besides it has evolved into to "Super Strings" and now "M Theory" (which is really cool BTW) in my lifetime. Will there ever be a single unified theory? If there is I don't think it will be Hawking's coming up with it.
Theory's are not to be believed but, questioned, until they can be proved then you have to believe them :)

Theories like this aren't to be "believed" or "disbelieved"...
Any theory is acceptable if and Only if it describes the behavior of the real world more accurately than a previous thweory
AND
If it is free of unneeded complications or predictions that don't pan out...
Right now, my best understanding of "String theory" is that it still requires 17 dimensions of space/time and has to do mathematical gymnastics to "hide them" because we don't experience them in the first place...
I think the theory still needs work.

If you really care, and want a relatively objective evaluation from someone who has made significant contributions to this and other fields, read the reference. It's untested, currently untestable, incomplete, and candidates as not one theory, but approximately 10^500 (yes, ten to the power 500) potential theories. It has so dominated modern physical science endeavor, that other more promising lines of effort are starved for funding. Votes here obviously mean nothing. Read for yourself.
