I know it is shaped like a box and you use your hands inside of it to control the volume and pitch but i cant think of what the thing is actually called.

Yeah, old guy got it first. It's a theremin. There's a local band here that uses one. It's pretty cool to watch someone play it. Check out "the octopus project" on myspace, the girl in the band plays one.

The music that you are thinking is made on a synthesizer. It is much more like a piano than a box you stick your hands into.
