I honestly believe it has so much to do with the way the world is. Especially the effects of materialism. I think all people need to really get into the spirit of Christmas. Remember that it not just about giving presents, but its about spending time with loved ones, eating together, laughing together. I mean when was the last time we all sang Christmas Carols together. I think the digital world is sad because we all spend less time knowing each other and more time watching movies about knowing each other!!!!

The holidays are always better when you are young (barring alcoholism or such in a parent) because you don't have to do all the work, planning. organizing, etc. There is a warm glow about the past that enriches it and softens the memories of the arguments, getting the wrong present, the dog throwing up, and so on. That said, in the fifties, Christmas marketing did not start on Labor Day weekend. Church services were an essential part of the holiday in my family, and the children's service at dusk on Christmas Eve was a serene and solemn corrective to the madness of last minute shopping. Many of our neighbors were born in other countries and had special customs like the Italian Christmas seafood feast. Electronic toys had not been invented yet--the most exciting things I received in that line were a telephone switchboard that had a wire that went upstairs so you could really make phone calls(!) and a friction car that turned when it reached the edge of the table (also!). Because I have given up attending church, and am yet waiting for a grandchild (cross your fingers on my behalf!), it seems more consumer-driven and less child- and spiritually centered. I realize, however, that I can change this by extending myself in new (and possibly difficult) ways by visiting a nursing home or baking for a shelter. But I tend to just stay home and read.

No, mine are getting better for me now.

I have created my own holiday traditions with my family.

I used to drag the kids around at holiday time. We'd travel, someone would always get sick. Everyone was stressed, we had none of our own traditions, just whatever the relative we visited had or didn't have.

I put my foot down. Said we will visit in summer when travel is less hectic, less dangerous (no blizzards, ice storms, etc) and the family actually has time to visit with one another because they aren't already overbooked.

Now we enjoy holidays at home, with our own traditions, eating the foods we enjoy. And in summer, we get together with family for a more relaxed visit.

whew!

I wouldn't go back for anything.

People were interested in putting "God" totally in their worship of the Christmas holiday. Now, the situation out there is very materialistic. I personally "give" of myself in a truly genuine way each and every day of the year. It's the little things that count. As long as I can spread "cheer" toward others, this is all that I am concerned with. I wish for all to enjoy peace, love and God's blessings.

I think almost everybody (of a "certain age") does...-I suspect it's because of the "Good Old Days Effect..."- when everybody thinks things were "better" -because we didn't "Know any better..." :)
