Social Security will be gone because too many people believe they're 'entitled' to benefits just because they 'paid into it'. Social Security was intended as an insurance program for people who were destitute when they reached their golden years. Instead, you have people in their 60's who are still able to work; still own businesses; have rich investment portfolios; own their home free-and-clear; take lavish vacations; drive two luxury cars; have a time share of vacation home; and have hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank - and they apply for a Social Security check that only serves to complement their already-gluttonous lifestyles. -RKO- 11/08/07

Being a "general fund" the money paid in has piled up and been spent by our oversized government.
From the beginning, the funds should have been untouchable.
Ron Paul has proposed ways to allow YOU to not pay into social security once you begin to work, and offer you a savings account (which the government cannot touch) of which you can pay into and retire on, or withdraw at any time.
Right now, if things remain as they are, when you work, you would pay in, but NEVER get social security when you retire.
If we cut other areas of government back to a manageable size, we could have the funds to hold social security. But the main thing needed is reform for you (the future).
Read some of Ron Paul's books (linked to free pdf books) on my profile if you want to pack that young brain full of knowledge that will help you thru school.

Don't blame Hilllary. The Republicans are the ones who have been "borrowing" from it for decades now, starting with Ronald Reagan. The trouble is that it isn't borrowing if you have no plan to ever replace what you took out. The Republicans are trying to dupe their supporters into believing that there's a magical endless source of money to fund everything without raising taxes, but the vast majority of the dollars they spend are borrowed from Social Security, the Federal Reserve, and various foreign countries. Eventually there will be nothing left to borrow, and Social Security will more than likely be the first casualty. Stop listening to propagandists like Rush Limbaugh and do a little research and you'll see that it's true. The Republicans have let all of us down.
