It has to do with evolution and the hunter/gatherer and nesting behaviors of our species. Women have developed nesting and gathering behaviors and they like to acquire things in preparation for times when things will be sparse and difficult to provide for their families. Even though life has changed significantly, we still have certain basic instincts.

It doesn't make all women feel better, nor does it make all men, children, or elderly people feel better. Some people simply shop for fun with friends! Some are bored, lonely, or they want to keep their mind busy (if they are having a bad day, lost a loved one, wanting to relieve stress, etc.)

We are fulfilling a void in our lives. For women we get a kick out of feeling good and looking good and feeling good are one in the same; thus if we are shopping for clothes this fulfills that need.

it may be because people(women especially cause our emotions are more easily expressed) has a tendency to be happy when they see(from shopping)/buy something they love

Ah, Retail Therapy... it's a quick fix; instant gratification... makes you feel good for the moment, but doesn't get rid of your problems... sometimes it adds to your problems b/c you end up in debt if you shop too much! ;-)

Because it makes you feel good to own something. I like to shop mostly for my husband and son, not myself though. Every now and then I will find a shirt on sale that I like.

It makes you feel better because you ( we all do) have an empty place in your soul( in your heart) and we all want................. (need)........ to fill that empty place......some shop...some drink....some eat....some gamble....some turn to the one thing that fills us forever........ JESUS.........that's who and what I turn to to fill my empty space.......now I'm NOT saying there is anything wrong with any of the other things...in moderation..........but JESUS fills you forever...so for me I will stick to Jesus.....thank you for the question ...it's a good one...smile

instant gratification...it makes you feel good that you splurged on yourself...until you get the bill then your depressed...and it starts over again.
