Star Wars has 30 yrs of history behind it, that alone makes it more popular than Lord of the Rings...which by the way liked alot, but Star Wars is a whole different animal.

That's a tough one. Both are beautifully envisioned and complete worlds and universes. The characters in both have incredible depth. They are both well written and well presented. All that being said, however, Star Wars has Luke Skywalker, so I've got to say Lord of the Rings.

EDIT: John N, Star Wars started in the 70s, of that you are correct. However, LOTR was written in the 40s and published by the 50s.....Been around much longer, and has a much firmer foundation of fan base.

I enjoyed both but to pick one over the other, well, it depends what type of a mood I'm in. If I feel like getting away from life for a while, LOTR. If I've had a bad day or need cheering up, Star Wars. LOTR you have to watch the movies in sequence whereas Star Wars, it really doesn't matter that much as each of the 6 movies are reasonably self-contained.

I personally enjoy Star Wars more. The Lord of the Rings is like fine cuisine; it is deep, multi-layered, takes considerable commitment to enjoy and multiple readings to taste all the different flavors. Star wars is more like a cheeseburger easy to understand and not too subtle - but boy is it delicious! You are always in the mood for a cheeseburger. Fine cuisine - not so much.
