A rudimentary game of tennis was said to be played by French monks around the twelfth century. It is believed that the monks derived it from a game they saw played by people in the Far East. The term “tennis” is said to have evolved from the French Monks’ habit of saying “Tenez,” meaning, “take this,” when they served the ball to their opponents.
