Hopefully this will be helpful. In general when answering an essay question in order to be successful you 1.start by re framing the question in such a way that it makes clear you are going to address the question and understand what the questions asks. For example, "As an individual I can think of a few things I can do to save the environment."
Then you begin to describe those things you have delineated in your opening sentence. To continue with your example:
"For instance, I know that recycling is important. some of the ways I can recycle are to reuse paper that has writting on only one side, make sure my plastic water bottles end up at the recycling center and not the trash can. I can make sure to refund my soda bottles and when they ask if I want paper or plastic I can choose paper. All of these things will help to produce less trash, use less tress, and leave more space in the landfills. By doing these things I will put less stress on the earth, leave more trees which is important because trees help to control pollution..."
"I can also compost the left over food stuffs I have everyday. When I compost I give back to the earth the minerals it has previously provided to the food..."
"Finally, in recycling and composting I will taking steps to help save the earth."

So, start with a topic/thesis sentence, which basically just restates the question. Give examples that support your thesis statement. And finally, conclude your writting by wrapping up your 'argument'.

Lastly, start reading a news site / newspaper everday--it will give you more thoughts to add to your essay.

For things like 'human rights' just think in terms of your everyday life. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, right? You want the right to speak your mind; the right to be educated--you are taking the GED; the right to be free to eat where you choose and shop where you choose, to live where you choose. You want the right to be able to feed yourself/your family which probably means you want to have the right to work...This is common sense stuff, if don't panic something will come to mind.
Best of luck.
Hope this helps.

take the question "what can you as an individual take to help save the enviornment?" and write a report about recycling. Do the research first. There is tons of information on the internet about recycling.
