In most states bouncing a $32 check is a misdemeanor, so the maximum sentence, by definition, would not be more than one year. Frankly, I doubt jail time would be involved, especially if it was a first offense. She must, however, take care of the outstanding charges. If she does not, it will be almost impossible to open another bank account anywhere else.

She could go to jail. Writing a check that bounces is a form of fraud or theft. I would suggest that she pays the fees involved with the bounced check, close her checking account and only use cash from now on, and enroll in a class on personal finance or talk to a personal financial counselor to learn how to balance her personal budget.
