Pococke wrote (p.28) " the city of Grand Cairo has been much magnified as to its extent, and the number of its inhabitants: it consists of three towns or cities a mile apart, that is old Cairo, Cairo properly so called, and the port of Bulac". He doubted whether the figure he was given of 2,000.000 for the population was correct (p.38).
