I have a '95 buick century and the left front wheel has started squeaking loudly. It stops when I apply the brakes. I have wasted money going back and forth to the mechanic for noises that mean nothing. Do I need to worry about a wheel squeaking? What could it be?

Most likely the squeak you hear is the brake wear indicator. This means that your front brake pads are almost worn out. Have them checked and replaced if needed!!

if the noise goes away when you hit the brakes I would have your front brake lining checked as that noise is the warning squeal to tell you that you need new brake pads before they cut into the rotors and ruin them, seems funny you only hear it on one side though but you could have a bad brake caliper where one side is wore down more than the other side.

I have a very similar car. Usually wheel bearings rumble but for some reason mine squeaked. When you hit the brakes it aligns the bearing in its proper orientation and it stops squeaking. Jack up your car a little and try to shake the wheel. If it wobbles it's your bearing. You will also notice it handles poorly and extended driving causes your tires to wear unevenly.

You may need brake pads. Go to one of those places that do brake checks for free.
