Being slowly and relentlessly stalked is much more intense than being chased down by some screaming banshee. Thats why zombie movies are so great.

Cara makes a good point though. Killers must know all the shortcuts. Every horror movie has a scene where Murderface (or other silly psycho name) is stalking some screaming teen through the woods, dragging his axe behind him... she's running, running (oh no! she tore her shirt!)... we lose sight of Murderface...she reaches the cabin... phew! She's safe.

OH NO! He's already behind the door!

Great answers, but one other reason is the fact that they (the movie's makers) want to give the impression that the killer kept his cool, while the "killed" ran in a panic, and eventually lost his / her bearings. If someone is running in a blind (or near blind) panic, they're not really paying attention to who's after them, and eventually they run so fast & far that they don't really know where they've gone, & even less where the killer is. Also, they lose track of time; thinking that it's only been a few minutes and that they have time to plan an escape, when it can sometimes be longer.

It builds the intensity of what is about to happen. You are supposed to feel what the victim feels. The victim is running and running and no matter how fast they go, they know their fate is to die regardless of how much they fight. The walking represents doom and the feeling of hopelessness. There is no way out of this situation.

An even better question is how do they always catch the people that ARE running? Never understood that. They must walk really fast.

They don't have to run because the person they are chasing always falls down at least once so lets them catch up.

Because they know that whoever is running away will always fall and sprain their ankle and they are so much easier to catch when they are limping.

Suspense. Otherwise the movie would end too fast. :(

It makes it more dramatic, besides unless it is the main person, everyone else is going to die so why make the bad guy run when eventually he is going to catch up w/ them (b/c they make stupid decisions) and kill them.....Why exert himself?

Because they don't have to. In the end all the promiscious sinners die anyway.
