If he lived in the Plains states he would pack up the vehicle and his family and move to CA. Hoping to find work in agriculture there. No houses, just lean-tos or cardboard walls. Some made friends at camps near the work site and everyone would share what they had, which wasnn't much to start with but they would put it all together in a big soup pot and everyone would share. The kids would make up games to play in the dirt with sticks or pieces of wire or whatever they could scrounge up. The whole family worked in the fields, including women and children. If there was any work. Single men would tramp along sometimes on trains or on foot. Everyone was in the same boat so they all understood how you felt.
