Wow, if you go to Broadway it won't be wasting your money and I wouldn't limit myself to one show unless that's all you can afford. Try going to the TKTS booth and seeing how many shows you can get tickets for as opposed to seeing 1 at full price, maybe you can see 2. You can also try any shows that have lottery seats, much cheaper if you get lucky :-)

Also, what show is the best is a matter of opinion. We don't know your likes and dislikes. What shows do you like? Maybe by your current taste we could make good recommendations as opposed to cookie cutter ones.

Not knowing your taste, I'd say a general crowd pleaser is Wicked. One I didn't think I'd like, but I really did was Legally Blonde. I liked Curtains but if I had one show to see, that wouldn't be it. I always love Rent. I love Les Mis but it can be a disappointment depending on the cast. Love Spring Awakening but it's not for everyone. 25th Annual Putnam County SPelling Bee was funny but like Curtains if I had 1 show to see, that wouldn't be my choice. Young Frankenstein looks good, but being a new show you're unlikely to get cheap tickets anytime soon.

good luck!

Personally I would say that the best play on Broadway right now is wicked. If you're thinking about going, even if you see other stuff, you should definitely see it. For anyone that likes theater I'd say it's a good musical to see.:)

Besides all the ones already mentioned, there is Drowsy Chaperone. It's a great show with a really awesome ending (in my opinion). A Chorus Line is always good. The Ritz is a hilarious play (not musical) that is definitely worth your time.
