use the distributive property, so you will have 1/5x+2/5=2. then subtract 2/5 from each side to get 1/5x=1 3/5. then divide 1/5 from each side to get x=8. that is the answer x=8

This is hard to type out, but here goes...remember that whatever you do to one side of the equation you have to do to the other side or it won't be equal anymore.

1/5 (x + 2) = 2

1/5 x + .4 = 2
-- 1/5 = .2 so 2 * .2 = .4

1/5 x = 2 - .4
-- divide each side of the equation by 1/5

1/5 x = 1.6
-- subtract .4 from 2

x = 1.6 / 1/5
-- Read that as x equals one point six divided by one fifth

x = 8
-- 1.6 divided by .2 (which is the decimal equivalent of 1/5)

Prove by substituting 8 for x

1/5 (8 + 2) = 2
1/5 (10) = 2
2 = 2 (10 * .2 = 2)

I hope that makes sense.

You could do what K said or you could distribute the 1/5 so it becomes:

1/5x+.4=2
[-.4]
1/5x=1.6
[\1/5]
x=8.

The way K did it is quicker but distribution is a skill you'll need to be good at for later work in algebra.

You have to divide the 1/5 over to the other side so it becomes x+2=10 and then you subtract the 2 over and it becomes x=8.
