Can I copy music from a CD from the library onto my computer (Windows Media Player) as long as I don't copy it onto a CD or distibute it? Also, can I copy music from a CD I own onto the computer, once again as long as I don't share it or make it into another CD?

Are either of these illegal?

If you are not the legal owner of a copyrighted CD, you do not have the right to copy it except for fair use. If you are copying it simply because you like to listen to it, that is not fair use. You may be liable for up to $150,000 for each instance of copyright infringement. You should go buy the album, or keep returning it and checking it out of the library when it's available.

If your computer is hooked up to a network, such as the internet, then potentially anything on the hard drive could be accessed by another user. That access or "file sharing" is illegal, so be careful about any copyrighted material that you keep on your hard drive. You would be better served to actually make a CD for your own use, and then delete the hard drive files. A CD you have control over and can be certain that it is not distributed.

at this time you can copy a Cd you purchased to you hard drive to use on you computer or transfer to you MP3 player. As for a CD borrowed from the library I think this will be against copy right as you have not purchased it, I'm sure there will be a clause in the libraries terms and condition stating this.

Of course you can!

Now look, sometimes we need to have a back-up copy of that favorite disc and if you are using WMP is always wise to do the following...

Open WMP when WMP loads click on TOOLS at the menu bar on top of the window, then click on OPTIONS from the scroll menu. Next, click on the RIP MUSIC tab, and remove the check mark (If it has it) from the COPY PROTECT MUSIC option. When this check box is checked, if you happen to transfer any music CD to your PC, WMP will add a copyright protection and if by accident you happen to loose your CD and you want to make a copy of that music by putting it on a blank CD, it won't let you because is copyright protected so is always good to have it cleared even if you don't intend piracy.

BYE.

YES YOU CAN - IT IS COMPLETLY LEGAL
THAT IS CALLED FAIR SHARE RULE - AS LONG YOU DON'T SHARE IT OR MAKE ANY PROFIT FROM IT YOU CAN DO IT FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY - NOT ANY PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER
you can even copy it on blank cd for back-up purposes and personal listening only
