You can not just stud any tire. It has to be one that has the holes for the studs.
The only stud guns I have seen are pneumatic, so you would need a compressor also.
There was a hand tool at one time that let you use a hammer.
I am sure that by the time you buy the gun, compressor, and studs, you will have more money in the project then just buying studded snow tires in the first place.

Given the time and hassle of getting the gun and studs and doing it yourself, you're probably just better off paying a tire shop to do it.

Here is a site i got my gun off of works very well. I've studded a bunch of my used tires for winter and some of my friends tires as well. I highly recommend balancing your tires afterwards. http://www.priertiresupply.com/index.asp?PageAction=PRODSEARCH&txtSearch=studs&Page=1

You could stud your own tires but Why ?There are certain things that should be left to the experts. This is one of them.
