This is something that's been one of my interests for a very long time. Usually, the answer is in the end credits. Watch carefully, and they will list everything used in the film: music and clips from TV and movies. These weren't listed till into the mid-Seventies; after that point, you should be able to find your answers.

Is there one in particular you're curious about? I keep a list of the ones I see.

A generic term for a film that refers to a film is called a "meta-film". That might be what you are talking about. The prefix meta- is used for things that are about themselves or in this case for a movie within a movie.

As mentioned, the internet movie database - www.imdb.com - does usually include that sort of information in the movie connections section.

There is no actual list for that at present on the internet.

It is sometimes in the trivia section of IMDB or wikipedia.

I just personally look at the clip and figure it out.

It is also normally in the end credits of the film under the special thanks....
