Can someone briefly explain the advantage of sexual reproduction as it applies to our population today or as it most likely applied to one of the first unicellular sexual organisms?

Sexual reproduction implies variance within the offspring, which have different traits. The best-fitting traits for the environment will be passed on, making sexual reproduction the primary producer of surviving traits. Asexual reproduction usually can occur quicker than sexual reproduction, but has very limited variance in the offspring. Hope that helped.

Sexual reproduction produces offspring with new combinations of genes. This variation is good for the population because it is more likely that one or more of the variations would be able to survive when the environment changes.
