Why is American Society/Culture so Lewd?

Question

Every time i turn on the TV to watch American programming I always have some disgusting non family friendly show or commercial in my face. Many people say just change the channel but what am i supposed to do when it only like 90% of all programming? And besides i don't think thats an excuse to have such lewd and violent behaviour on television anyway (IMO) especially since children like to watch it so much. Furthermore it's not only on television but its on billboards, buses, bumper stickers, the internet and almost all forms of media. Personally I find it disgusting that that advertises have to stoop so low and to use sex appeal in other to get something to sell. I always wonder why women complain about being exploited in the situations yet continue to pose for these kinds of advertisements. Anyway thats another story, so any got any ideas on American society/culture has become so repulsive? Why are conservative Americans allow this to continue?

You think it's bad here, maybe you should see all of the stuff that they allow to fly in those crazy countries in Europe....

Honestly, if you have a problem with it - don't watch it. And in my opinion, people who use the TV as a babysitter are more at fault then the broadcasters for exposing children to things.

I agree that morals aren't what they used to be, but can we really blame the media expressly?

I agree. As the mother of a 5 year old it's scary to think what's on TV.

Repulsivness, sex, lewdness sells - that's what so many people want to see.

Driving through downtown Dallas is excruciating when you have a child you're trying to teach decency - the billboards are horribly suggestive!

The options are deal with it or get out thats all you can do freedom of speech enables anything the mind can think of to be put up somewhere somehow. and whats lewd to you is ok to someone else so why because if a conservative says no does it got to be no what if a non conservative says no then what would happen.

American culture is actually much more censored than many other cultures. Turn on the TV in another country and you'll see porn on local access channels. While american culture is getting more and more...shall we say free...so are other cultures. It's just the progression of society and something everyone needs to live with.

An excellent question (and point) to which I have no real answer. Perhaps its simply because the media are "in control" as of late and the sad fact that sex sells.

I KNOW!!! The bottom dropped out of the protestant ethic. People discovered acting badly. The rest is the mess you see now on TV, movies, at the mall, in schools and on the streets of our cities.

well, it's a free country. we have the freedom to express ourselves however we want. it's a part of life. times change, and people change with the time. believe me i know. my step dad served in world war II, and he always tells me how he can't stand watching tv or watching movies anymore because they are all so explicit. when you get older it is natural to resist change.

I'm in the USA and I agree with you --- it's hurt a lot of our teens too (girls starving themselves/kids shooting people in school)......check out our good OLD SHOWS like:
