China is a big economy now, are they scared of losing the right to do business in China if they don't betray the dissidents?

To Wonderputz, I do think that companies should follow the laws of the country they are in, but there is a limit to that. These dissidents were peaceful, they weren't taking part in any violent or disruptive actions. Peaceful opposition to a government should not be a crime, free speech should be the right of all people! Give me liberty or give me death!!--Patrick Henry

I think it's utter idiocy for them to do that, however I also know that the people working for Yahoo! China are likely in the same position. Chances are, they're required to hand over the names of dissidents.

They did that a while ago. They say they stopped.
""Jerry Yang, the chief executive of Yahoo, apologized to the mother of an imprisoned Chinese dissident during testimony Tuesday at a heated U.S. congressional hearing on the company's role in jailing the man.""
""The dispute goes back to 2002 and 2004, when Chinese citizens Wang Xiaoning and Shi Tao were imprisoned by the Chinese government for "illegally providing state secrets to foreign entities." What they had done was use Yahoo's message boards to publish information about China's persecution of pro-democracy activists (which they both were). China demanded that Yahoo hand over the IP information and e-mail records of both parties as part of Chinese law, and Yahoo complied in both cases.""

Nothing in that particular article actually shows any wrong-doing by Yahoo. It basically says that Yahoo cooperated with Chinese authorities concerning these two cases. Is it a crime now for an international company to comply with the laws of the countries in which it conducts business?

Yahoo likes Police State Fascism....maybe if Hitlery or Gouliani get in,
they will turn over the information of all the Ron Paul advocates and government dissidents to the tyrannical NWO martial law government.....
It won't be long until the U.S. is just like China.....The most favored nation of Bush/Clinton dynasty.

no longer if the chinese language Communist party and Peoples Liberation military have something to declare approximately it. The PLA is the worlds greatest status military, with approximately 2.25 million troops decrease than palms. yet this military isn't configured to attack different worldwide places or maybe to shield borders. it somewhat is configured to regulate the inhabitants of China. somewhat, that's the gun held to the pinnacle of the chinese language people, a no longer so diffused reminder that to dollar the gadget is to ask your dying. the U.S. fell while the troops in Moscow refused the orders to kill the crowds of protestors. It very very nearly got here approximately in China, at Tiananmen sq. in 1989. the 1st troops introduced in have been recruited from the community section and did no longer obey orders to fireside into the crowds. Troops from outlying aspects have been rushed in, and the protests overwhelmed. for the reason that that factor a no longer ordinary and speedy rule is that troops are continuously transferred far flung from their abode cities to serve their time. Tiananmen sq. scared the chopsticks off the Communist leaders, and that they are making specific it is going to by no skill ensue lower back.

It's an interesting debate . . . profits from international American based companies no longer come from the U.S. (in fact the U.S. market slows growth) . . . however, the majority of the stock owners and employees are American . . . whose rights hold the trump card. Deny China and lay off thousands of American workers and devalue millions in American owned stock or send one Chinese journalist to jail. I still don't know the answer and I've been thinking about it for days.
