Try turning the thermostat down, number 3 is about right this time of year, if this noise is new, could be scale, pump slowing down due to wear, sludge in the system or sticking diverter valve.

If your boiler has a circulating pump that might be a problem, but generally the water in a boiler will roil when boiling. If you have a steam boiler, a little oil in the water can make it jump pretty good.

the noise is called kettling, your boiler probably has a small amount of debris in the heat exchanger from corrosion in the system, if it is not to bad a simple flush out of the water and add fernox boiler silencer will do the trick but if its bad a powerflush and new heat exchanger may be needed

It's the water contracting and expanding through the process of getting cool and then being heated. It happens to all boiler systems. Sometimes air trapped inside can make a hell of a racket. Systems should be bled once a year.

In a previous question I answered that my belly has been like your boiler all day, and I work in a library (yes it is supposed to be sort of quiet) and the thought of farting in front of all those people made it worse - glad to get home. Why don't you ask a plumber friend (got to be a mate as they make more money than brain surgeons) whats up. Anyway good luck - hope someone helps you. It must be so annoying, and a bit worrying too. Luv Camilla
