Apparently Yahoo turned over information to the Chinese government which resulted in the jailing of a dissident, seemingly to remain in the good graces with that government so that Yahoo could continue doing business in China.

I suspect they were more concerned with the freedom of their employees in China.

In every country in which Yahoo operates (including the US) the courts can subpoena information from Yahoo. If Yahoo fails to provide this information they can face criminal prosecution.

There are no actual profits made by complying with a subpoena. It normally cost a lot to comply as they have to pay someone to dig up the requested information.
