Well, there was nothing sordid, if that's what you're after.

When Beethoven's brother Carl died, Beethoven fought a long legal battle to become guardian of his nephew Karl. Beethoven was determined not to leave the by with his unstable mother. However, the boy was never happy with the composer and tried on several occasions to return to his mother as well as two attempts at suicide. Karl continued living with Beethoven until he joined the army early in 1827, shortly before the composer's death.

Ok, having read his biography (and gotten depressed in the process), Beethoven did not see his sister as a stable mother for his nephew Karl. He took custody of the boy, and this created a rift between Karl and his uncle. Beethoven taught the boy theory and piano, in which Karl wasn't really interested. Beethoven also wasn't the most paternal of human beings, but deep down, he really loved his nephew. Karl did become proficient at piano, but turned to drugs, and often used his uncle as a money horse. Karl did attempt suicide, and this destroyed Beethoven.
