I have a Gestational Diabetes and attended the diabetes class from the 3rd month of my pregnancy until now. Everything went fine, I've been able to control my sugar level with proper diet and exercise. My diabetes doctor told me that all has been excellent, baby is ok, and my OB agreed on that - I only gained 15 lb throughout my pregnancy. I am due after Thanksgiving - Nov 26. But today, my doctor says that normally if a peson is diabetic, they usually induce the patient 2 weeks before the actual due date (??). Is that corect? I don't believe in everything the DR says, so she suggesting that I should be induced on Nov 16 - the Friday before Thanksgiving week (??).
She says that the baby might get bigger if it reaches my due date (I've just gained 15 lb! My normal weight gain is around 20 - 25 lb!). Behind my back , I think she'd like to induce me because she will be on vacation the Thanksgiving week!! If you were in my shoe, what would you do? Would you agree to be induced?

This is my second baby. I had controlled Gestational diabetes with my first one but Iwas never induced. I gained 20 lb that time and my water broke naturally and had a natural labor. So I'm not sure why this time she'd like to induce ( I had diffrenet OB with my first)

I find that kind of weird as well. But I did find an article to support being induced. Your baby is considered full term by then so all should be well.

Because of these risks, if your practitioner suspects that your baby may be overly large, she may recommend delivering by cesarean section. Fortunately, only a minority of women with well-controlled gestational diabetes end up with overly large babies.

Good luck

ok at 38 weeks your baby is considered full term and does not have to stay in the hospital like it would if it was born before that and i have heard of dr's inducing up to 2 weeks before but never earlier and never 2 weeks past your date 38-42 weeks is when the would do an induction of any kind cause your baby is full term so go for it have your baby and enjoy i would want to be induced because i wouldn't want the baby to get really big for fear of a c-section and just cause YOU gained 15 lbs doesn't mean your baby isn't 7-8 of that already !!!
good luck and congrats

I'd get a second opinion.. I had GD with my first and wasn't induced until the day after my due date and my son was 9 and half pounds..
I've never heard that before, but I'm no doctor so I could be wrong.. seems especially strange since you haven't gained an overwhelming amount of weight.
Good luck and congrats with your new baby.

YOUR weightgain doesn't always mean that your baby hasn't gain a lot of weight.

Basically, your doctor wants to make sure that you're not going to have trouble. The bigger the baby, the more of a chance you'll have to potentially have a c-section. I have to beg my dad to take a week off. When I had my own children, he waited to come up until he wasn't on call.

Talk to your doctor. Listen to her. Most OB doctors I've met in my career as the daughter of a doctor do NOT take vacations. My own OB doctor takes about 2-3 days of vacation a year.

For the sake of my own health and the health of my child, YES. I would be induced.

personally, it sounds like she might be going out of town or is busy around the time that you are suppose to be having your baby... you could get a second opinion. but i thought that if you were diabetic that you would get induced. then again i am not , and i am being induced on the 13th. sometimes doctors induced women because its a way of knowing when you are going to be in the hospital, when the baby is coming, and when you are going to be going home. really kinda planned out ... which helps me out alot.
dont worry, but if you feel more comfortable, below is a link, try doing some research, and worst case... get a second opinion
best of luck to you and congrats on the new addition :-)

My sister is also a diabetic and she kept her blood sugars under such good control that my niece was only 6 pounds 2 oz at birth, but she did have to have a c-section due to her being breech and trying to manually turn her didn't work. She was born 7 days before her due date. Doesn't your doctor have someone else in the office that covers for her for vacations?

My son was induced because fo the Thanksgiving holiday and the fact that I was dialated at 4cm for over a week and a half. They thought maybe he might be positioned wrong because all signed pointed to his being ready to go. Weight was also an issue because he was a heavy 7. I don't think it's wrong for you - in the end it's all about having that healthy baby in your arms - good luck!

Fetal distress and other complications are much more common with an induction. Plus, I've heard that the pain is terrible. If I were you, I would not get induced.
I had four children naturally using the Bradley method.

they say the doctor knows best but in my opinion thats a load of rubbish, i lost a lot of blood with my first birth due to a split blood vessel. they took care of the blood vessel but no transfusion was given. at the time my doc was rushing about so she could go to lunch!! i ended up extremly sick after the birth for 2-3 wks because of the blood lose. If u feel that ur doc isnt looking out for urs or ur babies best interests it would be wise to change, see someone else.

I would visit another OB, even if I had to pay for it out of my own pocket, and get a second opinion.
