There were several Persian empires. The original and most famous Persian empire was the one founded in 550 BC by Cyrus. This empire was the same one that fought with the Greeks in the Battle of Thermopylae (300 Movie) and was eventually destroyed by Alexander the Great in 330s BC. Overall it lasted a little over 200 years. For comparison, that's about how long the United States has been around.

There were other Persian empires. The Parthians revolted against their Greek masters and took Persia back and ruled it for 500 years (250 BC to 250 AD approx) and fought against the Romans constantly but was never beaten (completely). The Sassinids overthrew the Parthian kingdom and ruled for 400 years from 250 AD until 650 AD when they were destroyed by the Muslim armies bursting out of the Arabian Penninsula shortly after the founing of Islam.

The old Persian culture has largely been overtaken by Islamic culture, however Islamic culture adopted heavily from the Persians and the Persian culture does still survive in small pockets within Iran.

If I'm not mistaken, you have a tri-part question. The first being old Babylon which I believe lasted 600 years. Assyria, and present day Iraq. The correct answer is it has meet it's end, it's still around today.
