put something behind the doors at night, chair, trashcan, a stick if there is a stairway then a door, the stick has to be placed on the floor to the door. If you have an upstairs, make sure you leave a lamp on downstair, leave a radio on low on a talk station, keep your stairway dark and put something at the top stair that will make noise. If you have a closet in near your front door then open that door up so that it touched the front door. Place little bells on strings around your door knobs. If your car has an alarm and is parked in a way that if you hit the panic button the alarm will sound, then keep the keys near you. Pray.

Have a land line phone. This way 911 is a lot quicker at getting you help than a cell phone.
Take a self defense course.
Keep doors and windows closed and locked at all times.
Keep the porch light and back door light on at night.
You can purchase motion detectors that sound a LOUD alarm. I found them online starting at 8.00!
Get a taser.
Never leave keys outside under a mat.
Use a padlock on your garage door. Use the combination type.
Apartment dwellers should never answer the door to "workers" without calling the building management to verify the person at the door is actually a hired worker.
No kids in the house? Buy a shotgun. You don't have to aim!

Just make sure all your doors are locked I was like this my husband worked the night shift when he was a police officer and i hated it and I had a 1 month old with me but I put lockes really good ones on the doors and I put a coach on the door the back door no one could get in becuase I had a dog buy a big dog I have a pitbull And put like shingles on the windows so if someone opens it you are going to be able to here it. Or you can get an alarm and have that installed there are so cheaps one like ADT they are only 49.99 a month. Or talk to your husband see what he says.

Get a dog. Preferably one with a BIG bark. I can't even tell you how much of a difference that makes for me when my husband is at sea.
Make sure you have a good security system, too.
Also, I have a few trusted friends in the area (my family is 3,000 miles away) that I can stay with for a night here and there if I'm feeling particularly uneasy. Sometimes just knowing that option is available helps to put me at ease.

My husband works nights so I am home alone every night. I got a dog, a gun and a dead bolt lock.
My dog is only a mutt- a lab/chow mix, but she is very protective.
I have a gun in the house, I don't know how to use it but I'm sure that if anyone had a gun pointed at them they'd be sure to head in the other direction.
I also have a house phone and my cell phone by the bed, just in case they cut the phone line- I know I may be over reacting a little about that but I've seen one too many movies!

I like the dog/security system combo. The other thing to do is if you are close with any of your neighbors, ask them to keep an eye out. If you have a block watch, you can all get together to keep an eye out on each other. Hope this helps!

Here in Australia you can buy sensor lights that come on in an instant as soon as they pick up on someone moving about your house on the outside. These are a very good deterrent for strangers or burglars who shouldn't be there.
