Does anyone have any suggestions on what to include in an art portfolio? I just need some suggestions, to give me some inspiration. (I have one year till i'll need it, but im still terrified im not going to be done/be good enough.)

Art students, can you give me advice on ways to improve my drawing?
(No, I don't have any examples of my work uploaded. Sorry :/)

Thank you!

Depends what you need the portfolio for... Art School...usually they want to see that you have a good foundation so practice your still lifes, work on shading and perspective. Then include peice that show a real sense of your own style, they like to see your mind at work, how creative you can get and the way you handle your mediums. And then for whatever's left show the range of media you know how to work with (graphite, charcoal, paint, watercolor, computer graphics ect.)

The only advice I can give you is on one hand do alot of drawing by observation to develope a firm base. But don't be afraid to let go and do peices that you invest emotional value into, above all else the portfolio should represent who YOU are as an artist.

One constant about a professional portfolio, for whatever purpose, is that it should ONLY contain the BEST of the best work. A good portfolio is no place to jam everything you have done for the last year or so. Pick out a dozen, or so, pieces and have them all mounted on mat board of the same size, and in neutral colors. (you don't want the mounting boards competing for attention with the artwork.)

The point will NOT be for the viewer to find where any piece might be improved. It will be to showcase technically flawless, and esthetically stunning work.

As far is improving your technique, anything we can offer will be pure guesswork, without something for us critique.

i've just started doing first diploma art and design after not doing any in like 5 years, the best way to improve is just practice until ur drawing is a lot looser, i would just draw things that are around you like leaves, house plants, flowers, fruit and veg etc

the good old portfolio is an ongoing chore...i will say try not to include alot of school projects...try to freelance something to some people for chump change and the portfolio atleast to start...
you will find that you will add and take away from it from time to time and you will work on it till they throw dirt in your face and plant flowers on your stone.
