I used to work for this person and after four years not seeing each other, I suddenly want to see him again. He was a great boss, very friendly with a nice sense of humor. We keep in contact by e-mail lately and I just had the urge to see him again as a FRIEND now. So does anyone ever had had that experience with a former boss?

He works in a different state now; not too far from where I work but I asked him if he ever in the neighborhood, I suggested that we should have lunch.

I think that the pen and a thank you note would have been sufficient. Why would you need to write him a letter of recommendation. You worked for him, not the other way around, right? Anyways, if you enjoyed and benefited from his leadership, writing a thank you letter was a good way to try not to leave on a bitter note, and people should be told what they are doing well to encourage more of the same. Your next step should've been to not call and write all the time. Two reasons: 1. Firing someone is hard, especially in this economy when you know they might be a while between paychecks. 2. The amount of times you've contacted him and the fact that you sent something to his personal address uninvited when you were a colleague appears to have creeped him out a bit. Good luck in your job pursuits

Why wouldn't it be okay? I feel like we are missing some details as to why you might have a concern.

There is nothing wrong going out to lunch with a former boss, I have kept in touch with past bosses and they are my friends. Bosses are people too :)

Let's face the truth, if you are feeling guilty about going to lunch with a former boss, then you definately have more than lunch on your mind.

I have had many boss's over my life time, they have all been pricks for the most part. they are not there to be your friend or your lover, they are there to do a job that they was hired to do, period ! to be your Boss and make sure that you do your job and do it effectively and in a timely manner, you can't trust them. they are a hired snitch, move on and find someone else,

I often go to lunch (and even drinks) with a few of my former staff members of the oppostie sex. If they're good people, why not keep in touch?

I had a great boss for seven years who went overseas with her husband. When she comes back into town we always get together.
