why do you spend so much money when you know that no matter how hard you try, it cant beat a jet. i guess it would be cool to have fast vehicles but only if aircrafts didnt exist.

but its too much like hooking up a beeper to make it the most reliable beeper. it would be cool if cellphones and pdas didnt exist.

And why race? Can't you guys figure out which car is faster by observation? if you know so much about cars than you do you have to race to see who wins?

Some people like to go fast. It's a rush! Some people just don't get it, including some guys too! Don't make the generalization that only guys try to make their car faster, girls do it all the time. It's just not as normal for girls to do it.

Why do some girls buy another pair of shoes when they all ready have like 40 pairs? It makes them happy and it gives them a rush. Everyone has something that makes them feel good, for some people working on there car and driving it just happens to be that thing.

Oh and flying in a 100 passenger jet at 35,000 feet even if your going twice as fas as in a car is just not the same! 100mph in a car is WAY different and so much more fun than 100mph in a 747 (big jet if you didn't know) imho! Plus fixing up a car to go fast is so much cheaper than buying plane tickets everytime you want to go fast.

Try it some time! Discover your inner adrenaline junky! Who know's next week you might be on here asking how to fix up your car!

Well for the why do we race question, we race because some people can shift gears faster than others. Plus there is a lot of things that can make a car go faster than others. If you go around a curb wrong, you can lose speed. And if you are drag racing than it is also about when you hit the spray, if you are using it. You can also strip out parts that make the car heavier to make you go faster. There are a lot of things that can make you faster in a race than just who is the better engine.
Guys who like cars better than planes like them more becuase you just do. Some guys like bikes better, why I don't know they just do. It is like girls liking different types of clothes or shoes, you just do.

You are correct, it does seem to fly in the face of all logic. utarch and IOU101 gave good answers. My wife is a clinical psychologist and says that it is one semi-civilized way of handling physical interpersonal competition. Sports is another example. Modifying your vehicle is a way of personalizing it, just as a person chooses unique ways to decorate his or her house. Very few people can fly jets, but everyone with a driver's license can enjoy the power and sense of control that driving a fast vehicle gives you. It may not be logical but it is here to stay!

I feel the same way. I fly planes and cars don't really thrill me. My plane isn't a jet but it goes faster than all but a few exotic cars.

Cars and bikes aren't street legal above the speed limit.

it's not a competition to the world, just to those you compete with...

but i agree in a sense, i'll take a bike over a car any day, bikes are WAYYY faster than cars...plus they are street legal (something that can't be said for jets)

Because we beleive in competitiveness and we love to win
the race and because it gives us a feeling of utter confidence
and that's our inborn nature.

Why do you spend so much on makeup and clothing when you're just going to get old, ugly, and die?

It's called a hobby.

It's a "guy" thing... if you have to ask, you wouldn't understand the answer anyway.... :-}

It's kinda like women "shopping"... we don't understand that, but we accept it as part of life....
