Oh man, this reminds me of when Vanilla Ice popped his head back up and called himself "Skate-core." I never heard it, and don't even know if he was parading himself as metal, but it jumped into my head and made me snicker.
To answer the question I would say a definite YES, but I'm really excited about the day when someone claims to be "core-core." It's happening across the board though. I remember a while back someone asked if there were too many genres and I made what I thought was a bad joke about someone using "post-post..." only to find that there actually was "post post punk" now.

They do get a little carried away with all the sub-genres but it's not the bands it's the industry just looking to label something really, the bands never came up with it they just play what they feel and like so they dont really get caught up in it all, some do but not many, yeah the differances are subtle but once you've listened to it enough you hear it,but I agree they are going too far, metal is metal and I dont call it anything else except a way of life,if its brutal I'm jamming it end of story ya know

Yes! They've been splitting hairs for a long time. They've gone back to double split a few hairs in fact. I mean, is there a huge difference between death metal, black metal, and doom metal? I'm sure there's some people that can tell the difference, but I can tell the difference between the Kinks and the Rolling Stones but I don't put them in two different genres. And how much does Blondie actually have in common with Slaughter & The Dogs? But I still call them both punk. You should see my classic punk playlist, it has all sorts of bands that have little to nothing in common.
But whatever makes them feel special, go for it.

Way too many, and some people are WAY tooo prickly about it too. I am sick of having people tell Me the Metal I listen too isn't Metal. I've been a Metalhead since 1983. And by lightning, UFO is Metal to Me and I don't care who else thinks so. I'm a total Metal fanatic..but this is all way too much. And once again Grunting is not the same as Singing.

i think of there are to many sub genres in all music!!! i think of it incredibly is by way of fact all people is so prepared to be diverse they arise with there own call for what they do. a number of those names unfold and a few do no longer. It quite does not could be so super.

i dont know the total, but i think they tend to make too many.
for me, you have the speed metal (slayer), brute metal (cannibal corpse), technical metal (death), goth metal (children of bodom, cradle of filth), and new metal (bullet for my valentine).
i mean, there are more bands that have different flavors, but i think people break it down too much so that every unique band would be its own genre.
either way, rock on! \m/
