I have allergies to certain plants and chemicals. I was constantly asked to work in the garden center by my employers. They needed a doctor's statement which I feel is unnecessary because when I was first hired, I was told I would only be working on the frontend as a cashier. The person who interviewed me does not work there anymore. But regardless, doctor's statement or not, I should not have been harrassed. This company is obviously not staffed well. I have been asked to work in other areas as a cashier but in these departments, I had no knowledge of my surroundings, which made me feel unhelpful to the customers. I feel it's the company's way of getting rid of the old and putting in the new seeings that I was one of the best and fastest cashiers there.

It is not their way of getting rid of anyone. They are seeing how you can adapt. This is how they identify those who can fit in everywhere. Those who are agreeable and cooperate are promoted faster...

Now, about the plants... you have been hired to work at this store, they can put you anywhere they need you. If you have allergies, you have to give them a doctor's note so that they are not putting you in an unhealthy situation for yourself.

It is not unethical to put an employee in a situation other than what they were hired for. Ever hear of growth opportunity? They know you don't know how, they'll train you... If it were me, I'd be trying to find out on my own, all the facets of the store in case they need someone as a supervisor or even an employee in another department. Don't limit your options, or you will find you are a cashier forever.

Maybe because you are one of the best and fastest cashiers they think you're a smart person, and are looking for a potential upgrade in your position.

They have the right to change your job duties.

If you are not capable of doing the job you have, which seems to include being able to cover stations and being flexible, then you have the right to quit.

Sounds like they are being more then reasonable to ask you for a doctor's opinion, so they can decide where you can and can't work.

Soudns like you are the best and fastest cashier at one station, but not at others. You didn't start out best and fastest, so why can't you learn again? Take that as a challenge at work instead of coasting, and you will find you are more valuable to the company - be the best everywhere, show them how that leads to happy customers and repeat sales, and then ask for a raise.

But if you can't be a team player in a retail environment then even a doctor's note won't help you for long. Cashiers are not that hard to come by.

It's a sin not to have a sense of humor in my personal code of ethics!

You need to talk with your supervisor and tell them that that area makes you extremely ill and risks your health. Reiterate what you were told when you hired in. If they offer you no solution then....

Start looking for another job. If these people don't respect your health and comfort you need to take some action to protect yourself.

My philosophy has always been.....I was looking for a job when I found this one and there is another one better waiting for me.

lots of luck
